The Duke of York surrenders his honor as Duke of York.
Prince Andrew is giving up his honors, among them the York's Duke, he has stated in a own words.
He has been under growing scrutiny over his associations with convicted criminal Epstein, with demands for the Palace to take steps against him.
That now seems to have caused the prince deciding to voluntarily hand back his titles and to surrender membership of the prestigious order.
In his message he said he continued to "firmly refute the allegations against me".
"In talks with the King, and my direct and broader family, we have decided the persistent allegations about me take away from the duties of the King and the Royal Family," said a message from the royal.
"I have decided, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my relatives and nation first.
"I support my decision five years ago to step back from royal engagements.
"With His Majesty's consent, we feel I must now go a further step. I will therefore no longer use my honor or the distinctions which have been granted to me. As I have said before, I vigorously refute the allegations against me."
The royal has faced a number of scandals, such as a court case he settled with Virginia Giuffre, doubts about his finances and his association with an alleged intelligence operative.
He will continue to be a royal - but will cease to be the the Duke, a honor granted from his parent, the late Queen Elizabeth.
The prince had already ceased to be a "working royal" and had forfeited the use of his His Royal Highness designation and no longer appeared at official royal events. His role now will be even more reduced.
His former spouse will be known as Sarah and no longer the Duchess, but their daughters will persist to have the honor of princess.
Prince Andrew has faced strong scrutiny over his connections with convicted sex offender Epstein, more in recent times including doubts about when he had actually ended contact.
In his media discussion, he had said that he had severed all ties with Jeffrey Epstein after they had been photographed together in the city in December 2010.
But correspondence sent in February 2011 later surfaced indicating that Andrew had in private stayed in touch with the financier, for example exchanging a communication: "Remain connected and we'll meet again soon!"
There had been increasing frustration in the royal household at the scandals that remained to envelop the figure.
Next week a book released after death by the accuser will be published which is anticipated to cast additional attention on Prince Andrew's involvement with the plaintiff and the financier.
