A popular South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation battling rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on a Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old entertainer was confronted by three individuals, one of whom shot at him before fleeing on foot.

The reason of the shooting has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, police said.

Details of the Attack

Authorities revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a location close to the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the site overseeing the setup of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, according to reports.

"It is alleged the victim was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report confirmed.

Security camera video showed a individual with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but collapsed a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the assault.

Key evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the crime scene.
