Line of Duty Announced for 7th Series on BBC
The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.
In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."
He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
The drama premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
