The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
