Chainsaw Man Tops the U.S. Box Office in First Weekend

Can Sony claim to have done it again? Coming after the triumph of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed in excess of $600 million at the box office, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the hundred-million-dollar mark internationally, attaining a worldwide gross of over $108 million this weekend. This feature surpassed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with actor Jeremy Allen White ($9M).

Notable American and Global Results

The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a straightforward follow-up of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It grossed $18.2M in the U.S. after a powerful five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday box office and $4.5M Sunday. Overseas, the animated by MAPPA film grossed nearly $15 million across 46 international territories, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million via Sony (over $43 million overseas, $18.2 million in the U.S.). The studio has not yet revealed its final earnings figure.

Benchmarks to Past Blockbuster Anime Movies

Specialist agency an industry expert had earlier commented, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the U.S. and Canada in the year 2022 and opened to a nearly identical $18 million stateside. Reze Arc’s opening frame aligns with that standard, while its $108 million international sum is now positioned a bit short of the earlier film's $166.6 million overall box office. While it is improbable the Reze Arc movie will match the box office of mega hit the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a huge win for Sony.

Fan Engagement Efforts Boost Success

Along with its affiliate the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged fan engagement to boost their leadership at the cinema for anime films. The movie's promotional efforts kicked off at Anime Expo Los Angeles in summer with a discussion featuring MAPPA, exclusive activations, and photo opportunities with Pochita, followed by a major presence at the New York Comic Con featuring exclusive clips, audience giveaways, and more MAPPA sessions. Moreover, organizers held an special preview for fans for moviegoers and content creators as well after the last day of the convention.
