Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he admitted that the board had not mentioned a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
