Alleged Harasser Asked: 'However What If I Might Be Madeleine?'
A female indicted with stalking Kate McCann apparently left her a recorded message which asked: "imagine I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, twenty-four, who a jury heard has consistently claimed she was the vanished Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are on trial accused with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February 2025.
On Monday, the court heard communication data and data retrieved from phones logged Ms Wandelt consistently asking Madeleine's mother for a biological test throughout that period.
Madeleine's vanishing in 2007 - when she was three years old during a trip in Portugal - is one of the most publicized investigations and continues to be open.
'I Don't Want Money'
One recorded message, presented in court, captured Ms Wandelt stating: "I understand I'm heavy and unattractive like Madeleine had been, but I feel what I feel."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's monologues with Mrs McCann's voicemail expressed: "What if there is a small chance that I'm her? What then? Wouldn't that be significant for you?"
"I don't want money, I maintain a existence here in Poland, I just want to know," she added.
The jury was told that through electronic messages, SMS messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt asked for a genetic test, sent early photographs to her phone in a attempt to demonstrate a resemblance to Mrs McCann's vanished daughter, and claimed to have "flashbacks" from a youth with the McCanns.
An intelligence analyst, a data specialist with law enforcement who collated the evidence, told the court there "didn't appear to be any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt also communicated with acquaintances of the McCanns, according to the call data.
On 9 October 2024, the father responded to a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "the wrong phone."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt left a message on Mrs McCann's voicemail declaring "I won't give up and I plan to establish my position."
The court was informed Mrs Spragg developed a relationship via internet with Ms Wandelt before joining her on a visit to the McCanns' property in Leicestershire in December 2024.
Communication data demonstrated Mrs Spragg had contacted via messaging service to Mrs McCann to state the news outlets had characterized Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she ought to be considered genuine in the period leading up to the visit to the village, that area, in December 2024.
The court heard communications between the two accused, in November 2024, discussing trying to acquire Mrs McCann's genetic material from her trash or from cutlery at a eating establishment.
"We need to assert ourselves," Mrs Spragg informed Ms Wandelt.
On the occasion of the trip to their house, Mrs Spragg sent a message which stated: "We're currently sitting near the McCanns' home with our lights out similar to private investigators. I wanted to achieve this with someone else I didn't imagine I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
The proceedings proceeds.
